The Reading Hour is enriched by the support of many wonderful ambassadors and friends who are doing amazing things in the reading and literacy fields and who believe in the importance of reading.

We are delighted to announce that our friend and much-loved Australian actor and author, William McInnes—who is also a champion of books—is our National Ambassador for The Reading Hour in 2014!

Australia Council report finds Australians ‘reading more often’

‘More Australians are reading, and they are reading more often,’ according to a new survey of arts participation by the Australia Council.

While the report Arts in Daily Life: Australian Participation in the Arts stated that ‘the way frequency of reading is measured changed’ between its previous survey in 2009 and its new survey in 2013, it found that ‘over half of readers are reading weekly, at 57% compared with an estimated 38% in 2009’.

The Reading Hour is back for 2014!

Put Tuesday 19 August 6-7pm in your diaries and stay tuned for updates on events, competitions and how your family, business, school or library can help us celebrate the importance of reading again this year.

The Reading Hour initiative reminds parents and caregivers that reading together doesn’t have to be a massive undertaking in their busy lives, and that sharing a book with a child for 10 minutes a day - or just over an hour a week - will still give that child the best chance of becoming a good reader along with all the social and educational benefits it brings.
