To celebrate the National Year of Reading2012, Future Leaders is conducting the Questions Writing Prize 2012. Young Australians (under 23 Years) are invited to submit writing of 1,500 to 2,000 words. The writing can be fiction or non-fiction and on any topic. The prize for the best writing submitted is $2,000 and the winner of the Questions Writing Prize will have their work published.

Fremantle Library Outdoor Reading Room
WAKing's Square, Fremantle
Fremantle City Library’s outdoor reading room is open to all, no membership or registration required. Located in King’s Square near the Jean Hobson playground the reading room offers books, magazines and current newspapers for use in the reading room. Drop by and browse, read a while, then leave it for someone else to enjoy. Wifi is also available at the reading room.

The State Library’s flagship initiative to kick-start the National Year of Reading is the Love2Read Café, an outdoor reading room based on the Bryant Park model in New York. Filled with brightly coloured chairs and tables, and five book trolleys featuring a range of reading materials for all ages and interests, the Love2Read Café will also have a range of programs and events suitable for all audiences. The events are free and no booking is required. Each Saturday visitors to the café can Play with Words borrowing a variety of word games, and on Sunday afternoons at 5.00pm, classic Australian films based on books will show on the big screen. People can also share a quote from their favourite book on the Reading Wall inside the library. The Café is open from Monday – Thursday (10:00am – 7:30pm), Friday (10:00am – 5.00pm) and Saturday and Sunday (10:30am – 5.00pm).

To celebrate the National Year of Reading for 2012, an exciting competition ‘The Amazing READing Race’ has been launched in partnership with The Morning Bulletin.It’s easy for all ages to get involved and win great prizes! Readers will need to drop into one of Council’s libraries and answer a question by viewing a weekly display. When the answer is submitted, participants will go into the draw to win prizes.

Drawing inspiration from Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series, by Ann Brashares, the program sees nine pairs of jeans travelling between 40 rural, metropolitan and regional public libraries. Participating libraries will be decorating the jeans, hosting programs and displays, before sending the jeans to the next library. See the website for further details.
